ABOUT US

In 2000, VFI became the first international organization to be founded in Laos, and began working in Cambodia in 2003. The annual budget has grown from $125,000 in 2000 to more than 2 million in 2009. VFI’s 75 staff members serve almost 200 villages and approximately 50,000 people in 2009, a dramatic increase from 15 villages and about 4000 people in 2000. VFI is registered as a 501(c)(3) in the United States and as a charitable organization in Hong Kong, Despite the growth, VFI has remained true to our founding spirit: to emphasize local leadership, decision-making and project ownership, in both Laos and Cambodia. In the last couple of years, VFI has actively promoted the creation and empowerment of Village Focus Cambodia, a local organization under the direction of Dr. Meas Nee, one of the most visionary development leaders of the country. In Laos, ‘Our Village’, is taking the steps necessary to emerge out of VFI as an independent local organization, under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Boualaphet Chounthavong (1000 Women for Peace), one of a very few strong, capable civil society organizations that will lead development in Laos for years to come.

VISION

VFI believes that every village/community is 'healthy*' with the capacity, legal right and power to participate fully in the improvement of their own quality of life.

MISSION STATEMENT

To holistically address issues affecting daily life, through local leadership development, integrated training and support in the sectors of education, health care, agriculture, natural resource management, child protection and empowerment and legal protection, and with focus on marginalized communities.

To achieve this mission, VFI emphasizes the following principles:

  1. Community participation in local and national policy making;
  2. Gender equality in planning and decision-making;
  3. Sustainable Natural Resource Management as an integral part of community and national development;
  4. Land tenure, co-management and user rights over land and its resources;
  5. The right to a basic level of health care and education services;
  6. A transparent and just legal system with equal access and protection.
*VFI’s definition of a ‘healthy’ village takes into account physical, social, environmental, intellectual, economic and spiritual components. Please ask us for a more detailed definition, which borrows from own experience and that of our development partners.
