TRAVEL INFORMATION
SIEM REAP
One of the best reasons to visit Angkor Wat and participate in the Bike Race and Half-Marathon is the chance to spend time in Seam Riep – one of the most splendid destinations in Southeast Asia. Just over a decade ago, the town was suffering amidst gun fire and electricity outages as efforts to remove the Khmer Rouge from the area remained a challenge.
Fast-forward to today and Siem Reap is booming as the leaping off point for the magnificent temples of Angkor, one of the original 7 wonders of the world, with nearly 1 million visitors each year. Set astride the Siem Reap River, this picturesque, provincial town combines Khmer culture with natural beauty. This town has plenty to meet the needs of most travelers, including local markets, handicraft shops and hundreds of guesthouses, hotels and cafes with wireless internet, good coffee and healthy juices and foods. ATMs are now freely available in Siem Reap, provided your cards are compatible.
See information about hotels.
HOW DO I GET TO SIEM REAP?
We are glad to help you arrange any of the following ways to get to Siem Reap:
- Siem Reap has an international airport with service from Bangkok (Bangkok Air), Vietnam and Laos (Vietnam Air), Hong Kong (Dragon Air), Singapore (Silk Air) and Phnom Penh.
- There is a $25 boat service each morning from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. This is a 4-5 hour journey, but one of the most wonderful experiences this time of year with the Tonle Sap Lake at high season through the flooded forest.
- Road transport between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh has greatly improved with a new road. It takes 4-5 hours and can be arranged via a taxi minivan or bus.
IS COMING BY MYSELF A GOOD IDEA?
Definitely. We will have plenty of activities and events to get to know the other participants that are arriving from many countries. The Village Focus staff and two youth teams from Cambodia will also be joining us for events. We will post the final agenda on the Event Agenda page.
IS CAMBODIA A DANGEROUS PLACE?
Not at all. Cambodia is quite safe and has a well developed tourist infrastructure. Suitable accomodation is available for even the most upscale of travelers.
HOW EXPENSIVE IS CAMBODIA?
How much you spend is largely up to you and your travel style. For example, you can find a place to stay in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh for as little as $3, or stay at a 5 star hotel if you wish. Food prices start at about $5 a day and fine dining is both plentiful and affordable. ATMs are hard to find outside of Phnom Penh, so bring cash and traveler's checks! Cash advances on credit cards are available at banks.
I WANT TO SUPPORT VFI IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. HOW DO I DO THIS?
We can send you a sponsorship letter that you can tailor and send to your loved ones. Most companies and local businesses will support their employees in fundraising events. If you are coming with a companion, have a contest to see who can find the most sponsors, and track your progress! You can even have a party at your home or host a benefit concert! Contact Todd for more information on fundrasing options.
HOW WILL MY SPONSORS' MONEY BE USED?
All the funds raised from the event will support VFI child protection projects and land mine survivors through our partner Hearts of Gold.
