INDIA

Since its independence from Britain in 1947, Indian society has made great strides to alleviate poverty, develop local leadership, empower women, improve education, and
promote public health. The caste system still severely limits opportunities for the majority of Indians who occupy the lowest social strata, but services for these groups have improved.

Thousands of local NGOs are working in the most remote areas of India with women, children, and indigenous communities. These organizations are helping villages organize and develop their capabilities in areas such as sustainable agriculture, leadership, micro-enterprise, and environmental justice.

However, it is difficult for local NGOs working in rural areas to secure funding for their endeavors or build an international network. VFI partners with local Indian organizations by seeking donor support and providing technical assistance.
