GOAL: To provide ethnic minority children with the opportunity to receive a formal education, with the possibility of subsequent vocational training and college studies.
CONTEXT: There are very few schools, or other social services, in remote areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in a remote province such as Mondulkiri. Outside investors and corrupt officials exploit the land and labour of the Bunong and other communities, remote groups with very limited access to social services.
In the face of these pressures, basic education enables all children to contribute to the quality of their own life, as well as the quality of their family and their community. Basic education enables children to understand issues that affect their daily life, including health care, food security, land rights, livelihood activities, and a range of other issues.
TARGET GROUP: Ethnic minority children in Mondulkiri province who lack access to formal education, scholarships and other social services.
OUTPUTS AND SUCCESSES
Remodel of Boarding School, including electricity and facilities for students
140 students from ethnic groups in Mondulkiri receiving secondary education
Recruitment of house parents who provide emotional and moral support for students, most who have left ethnic community for first time.
Students receive training in legal rights, decision-making and conflict mediation and are able to transfer those skills to their families and communities.
