Weaves of Cambodia

Goal: To create livelihood opportunities for amputee survivors of land mine
explosions in Preah Vihear, a remote province controlled by the Khmer Rouge
until 1999.

Context:
Cambodia remains full of an estimated 6 million unexploded land
mines, most designed to maim instead of kill. As a result, many Cambodians are
missing limbs due to mine explosions, severely limiting their job opportunities and ability to support their families. In partnership with weaving expert Carol Cassidy of
Lao Textiles
, Weaves of Cambodia is a successful business run by these victims of war, who weave fine Cambodian silk that is exported internationally to high-end consumers.

Target Group:
Land mine survivors in Preah Vihear, Cambodia

OUTPUTS & SUCCESSES

  • Land mine survivors are securely employed

  • Weaves of Cambodia has quickly become a self-sustaining enterprise

  • Traditional Cambodian silk weaving is being revived and internationally recognized after nearly disappearing during decades of war

  • Weaves of Cambodia silk was recently named best quality silk in Cambodia at an international silk exposition
