BACKGROUND: Economic and Social Re-launch of the Northwest provinces, ECOSORN project, was founded in cooperation between the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) and the European Union (EU). The overall objective of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction through increased household income, mainly through increased agricultural production. The project purpose is the economic and social development of the rural population in 3 northwest provinces of Cambodia. Smallholder farmers and their family members living in the project area are the primary beneficiaries of the project.

VFI-ECOSORN:

Project Title: Construction of Water and Sanitation Facilities
Amount: 1,080,946 Euro
Duration: 2.5 years
Start: From January 2007 to June 2010
Target area: 3 provinces, 14 districts, 36 communes, 78 villages

Objectives

  • To improve awareness of the need of improved household practice related to water and sanitation,
  • To provide water supply and sanitation facilities, and
  • To improve sustainability by introducing appropriate technologies available beyond end of project.

Expected Results

  • Improved access to water supply services especially in the dry season
  • Increased access to sanitation facilities that are properly used and maintained

Improved Health

  • Reduced incidence or prevalence of diarrhea disease
  • Reduced incidence or prevalence of other key disease groups

Improved Household Practices

  • All households show a substantial improvement in essential household practices (hand washing, latrine use, water filtration/boiling)
  • All households comply with basic water supply, sanitation and hygiene standards (proper disposal of feces)
  • Keeping the wider environment clean and free of waste and excreta, good drainage of wastewater, careful storage of food and water containers.

Target Groups: 78 of the poorest villages in remote parts of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap Provinces.

Outputs and Successes

  • Established village project teams and completed needs assessments, action plans and maintenance training in all 78 villages;
  • Hired and trained 25 staff members, including many former Fellowship students.  They continue to receive training and gain valuable experience in building relationships with village planning teams, contractors and government officials, all of whom will continue to implement village support activities in the next phases of VFI work in these provinces;
  • Nearly 50% completion with project goal of nearly 6,000 latrines; 110 water wells; 1,000 water storage jars; and 5 large ponds in 78 villages;
  • Improvement in village health and sanitation, as well as simple irrigation systems for family gardens.
