GOAL: To build a strong network of linkages among marginalized indigenous communities throughout rural Cambodia, to secure their traditional lands and defend their rights against illegal encroachment, protect culture and secure their livelihoods, with an increased focus on the connection between land and food security.
CONTEXT: In Cambodia, indigenous peoples remain marginalized, represent less than 10% of the population, live in remote parts of the country and are underrepresented in almost all positions of power. They typically do not speak Khmer, have limited education and skills, and lack any voice and representation in the public processes that affect their lives and livelihoods.
While Cambodian law has recently been reformed to guarantee indigenous peoples’ rights to their land, encroachment by investors (domestic and foreign) is strategic and powerful, and communities are almost powerless to defend their rights.
TARGET GROUP: Indigenous leaders and community organizations in Mondulkiri and Preah Vihear provinces, which have the highest degree of land encroachment in the country.
