Upland Food Security (UFS)

Goal: To train villagers on new agricultural and animal husbandry techniques
in order to reduce annual food shortages and conserve local forest resources.

Context:
Indigenous communities face frequent rice and food shortages as
development and logging reduce their access to formerly abundant natural forest
foods. These diminishing resources can be replaced by gardening and agriculture,
but villagers require training on proper cultivation of these products.

Target Group: Indigenous people in the uplands of Southern Laos

OUTPUTS & SUCCESSES

  • New agricultural practices are being adopted in 53 villages prone to annual food shortages

  • Diminishing forest resources are conserved and refurbished

  • Nutrition improves; disease caused by malnutrition is reduced

  • Villagers produce surplus foods that and sell them for extra income
